Crafting Borrelli shirts
Each step of making a Borrelli shirt is masterfully done by hand, to create an unmistakable fit. The inspiration comes from the ancient Neapolitan sartorial taste, in which the shirt was a representative item. In the same way today, shirts are sewn using the same criteria of the ancient Neapolitan shirt makers. Each shirt bears the signature of the artisan who has made it, certification of its uniqueness, quality, and style.
1. Armhole
In a shirt sewn by machine the armhole is too much solid, but this latter regains an extraordinary ductility in a Borrelli´s handmade shirt.2. Collar
The collar sewing is put under the care of the best embroiderers. It's the most delicate step in producing a shirt, because collar is the part of a shirt closer to skin and has to provide a sense of softness like a caress.
3. Yoke
A delicate step in processing a shirt, concerning a perfect union between shoulder and shirt. That's the reason why the yoke is completely hand-sewn. That way Borrelli can eliminate every tension due to sewing by machine and guarantee the realisation of a perfect and soft yoke.
4. Front Placket
The front placket holds the buttons laterally, and is embroidered with a sopramano stitch, locked with an embroidered tab.
5. Mouche
It is the small white pentagon, made of taffeta and folded in a triangle, which joins the front with the back side of a Borrelli´s shirt. Its sewing is also handmade in order to give to shirt an incredible firmness.
6. Cross Stitch
It is a seal, embroidered by Borrelli's workers, which fasts the sleeve placket. It is a small detail which helps to make a Borrelli piece unique..
7. Buttonhole
A buttonhole that must wear well in time, is the result of a flexible but lasting embroidery and the a smerlo stitch.
8. Button
A button is sewn through a three point stitch, called a zampa di gallina. That is an old but so wonderful looking peculiarity of the Neapolitan sartorial art that only skilled artisans can realise.
9. Cannoncino
The last step of processing a shirt is replacing the cannoncino through a delicate stitch that let it go into the cross stitch. That ensures a brilliant embroidery and a perfect ironing.
10. Collar inside
The collar outline is made through a solid form and its cutting by hand, according to the model chosen by the customer..
11. Welt
Borrelli takes care of details during welt refining too, checking it step by step.
12. Collar piping
It is a basic element to support a collar. Drawn first and then carried onto a solid cloth, the collar piping is cut by skilled artisans.
13. Marking
In the marking step Borrelli's workers make marks on a cloth. Those indicate where collar buttons must be exactly sewn.
14. Collar turning over The collar is sewn inside-out first, later it's turned over, right placed and sewn on the shirt again. .
15. Checking
As care and accuracy belongs to Borrelli's philosophy every shirt is checked again after collar sewing in order to ensure everything is perfect.
16. Folding
During this step a shirt is folded and ready to be packed. In this case Borrelli prefers artisans' hands as well, according to his philosophy.
17. Packing
Finished shirts are put into elegant boxes. Enclosed are tags which guarantee that it's an authentic Borrelli shirt. The shirt is now ready to be worn.
